It is our pleasure to invite you to the ESVCP/ECVCP Congress
2025, set to take place in the cosmopolitan city of Bristol, England, from
October 1-4, 2025. Our goal is to provide knowledge, entertainment, and create
opportunities to make new friends and collaborators. We aspire to create a
Scientific Programme that will attract not only veterinarians but also veterinary
nurses, technicians and scientists who
are interested in clinical pathology and
laboratory diagnostics.

topics and our early-career clinical

Dr Adele Williams-Xavier

Adele Williams-Xavier is an artificial intelligence (AI) and clinical data
expert in the vet profession.
She is an equine internal medicine specialist, having a PhD and worked in
various veterinary academic institutions.
Adele has led the creation of AI tools in the pet care space, and getting data
right for building AI tools and getting meaningful insights out of data.
She is fascinated by data and building tools to help improve the lives of
animals and also making life in the veterinary profession easier.
Adele owns AWX Consultancy, an AI and clinical data consultancy to the
veterinary profession, where she educates veterinary professionals, and advises
veterinary businesses on AI and clinical data.
She also is a board advisor to veterinary technology start ups on development
and deployment of vet tech products. She advocates for governance of AI tools
and responsible and ethical adoption of AI in the veterinary space.

Dr Carlo Masserdotti

Carlo Masserdotti
graduated in Veterinary Medicine in 1990 at the University of Milan.
From 1993 his interest was mainly focused on clinical pathology, particularly
in diagnostic cytopathology, attending specialistic courses and references
institutions in Italy and in foreign countries.
From 1998 he is teacher and lecturer at course of Cytology, organized by
SCIVAC.
From 2001 to 2004 he was President of SICIV (Italian Society of Veterinary
Cytology).
From 2003 to 2006 he was Vice-president of European Society of Veterinary
Clinical Pathology.
In 2005 he received the de-facto recognition as Diplomate of the
European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology.
In 2008 achieves post-graduate Specialization in Clinical Biochemistry, at the
University of Brescia.
Currently he is consultant in anatomic and clinical pathology at IDEXX
Laboratories.
He is the author of the book “CANINE AND FELINE LIVER CYTOLOGY”, published in
2024.
Dr Charalampos Attipa

Dr. Attipa is an
Associate Professor of Veterinary Clinical Pathology at The Royal (Dick) School
of Veterinary Studies and The Roslin Institute, University of Edinburgh.
After becoming a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists
and an RCVS-recognized specialist in Veterinary Clinical Pathology, he was
awarded a Welcome Trust Clinical PhD Fellowship at the Liverpool School of
Tropical Medicine.
His research focused on the role of neutrophils and neutrophil extracellular
traps (NETs) in paediatric cerebral malaria in Malawi, utilizing -omics
approaches in clinical samples, ex-vivo cell models, and mouse models.
His primary research interest lies in understanding how abnormal granulopoiesis
and NETs influence immune responses in chronic infections. He is also leading
ongoing research projects in Malawi on malaria and zoonotic infections.
More recently, he has been heading a project investigating an outbreak of
feline coronavirus.
Dr. Attipa has authored or co-authored several publications in international
peer-reviewed journals (including Nature Medicine) and has been a speaker at
several international conferences.
Clare Roberts

Clare
Roberts has over 25 years’ experience within veterinary practice. After graduating
from Swansea University with a degree in Marine Biology, she subsequently qualified
as a Veterinary Nurse in 1998.
Whilst
nursing within several UK Veterinary hospitals she became interested in
pathology often finding herself responsible for the analysers. Then in 2014 she
joined Rowe Veterinary Group in Bristol as a laboratory technician. There she
has developed her skills and the laboratory into a thriving addition to the
practice. In 2024 she was in the first cohort to gain the ISPVS Ncert in
laboratory techniques.
In practice
she enjoys educating both undergraduate and qualified vets and nurses in the
correct use of analysers and result interpretation focusing on sample quality.
Cytology and haematology are Clare’s true passions, and she is never far from a
microscope.
Prof. Ed Hall
MA, Vet MB, PhD, Dipl.ECVIM-CA, FRCVS

Emeritus
Professor of Small Animal Internal Medicine, University of Bristol
A Cambridge
graduate, Ed then trained in Philadelphia and Liverpool before moving to
Bristol Veterinary School in 1995. He is a Diplomate of the European College of
Veterinary Internal Medicine, an RCVS Recognised Specialist in Small Animal
Medicine (Gastroenterology), and a Past President of the British Small Animal
Veterinary Association.
Dr Elpida Sarvani

Elpida graduated from the
Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Thessaloniki, Greece in 2005. Following 1.5
years of internship training at the same Faculty, she moved to the UK and
worked as a first opinion vet for several years.
Elpida then undertook a residency in Clinical Pathology at the University of
Bristol Veterinary School and has since worked in different private labs, being
involved in clinical work and in training of residents and interns in Clinical
Pathology.
Elpida obtained board certification in clinical pathology in 2018 becoming a Diplomate
of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP), in 2022 she became a
Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology (ECVCP) and
is an RCVS-recognized specialist in Veterinary Clinical Pathology.
Dr Emma Dewhurst

Emma qualified in
Veterinary Medicine from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, in 1994.
After which she spent 2 years in the Basic Science Department at the Royal
Veterinary College before returning to her hometown of Bristol where she then
worked in small animal practice for 3 years.
In 2003 Emma completed a residency in Veterinary Clinical Pathology at the
University of Bristol Veterinary School under the tutelage of Dr Kostas
Papasouliotis. In 2003 Emma was awarded the Diploma in Veterinary Clinical
Pathology from the Royal College of Pathologists.
In 2008 through dissertation and viva Emma became a Fellow of the Royal College
of Pathologists. In 2008 Emma was also awarded the European Diploma in
Veterinary Clinical Pathology.
Emma has worked in the commercial veterinary diagnostic industry since 2003.
She is particularly interested in the diagnostic utility of laboratory tests,
having published in this area.
Outside of work, much of Emma’s free time is taken up with joining her husband
sailing. Emma and her family currently live 7 minutes from the beach in
Teignmouth, South Devon.
Dr Emma Dickey
MS BVMS (Hons) DipACVIM DipACVP MRCVS

Emma
qualified from Glasgow Veterinary School in 2003 after which she completed an
equine internship at the Curragh in Ireland.
Emma then undertook an Equine Medicine Residency at the Marion DuPont Scott
Equine Medical Center, Virginia, USA and became a Diplomate of Large Animal
Internal Medicine in 2009.
Emma then worked as a clinician in Scone Veterinary Hospital, Australia
followed by a period of research at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.
In 2012 Emma returned to the UK and started a Clinical Pathology Residency, and
became boarded in Veterinary Clinical Pathology in 2016.
Emma currently works as Equine Clinical Pathologist at Axiom Laboratories,
UK.
Dr Emma Hooijberg
BVSc CertGP(SAP) PhD DipECVCP

Emma graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Science,
University of Pretoria, South Africa with a BVSc in 2001 and spent 6 years in
small animal practice in the UK.
She subsequently completed a residency in Veterinary
Clinical Pathology in Vienna, Austria, and became a Diplomate of the European
College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology in 2012.
Emma joined the
Dept. of Companion Animal Clinical Studies at the Faculty of Veterinary
Science, University of Pretoria at the end of 2014. During her 10 years in
academia, she completed a PhD and supervised several post-graduate students and
residents, took part in teaching activities, and eventually headed the clinical
pathology section and laboratory.
Emma returned to the UK at the beginning of 2025 to
work for Nationwide Laboratories, where she is part of the Clinical Pathology
team.
She is the author of over 50 scientific articles and
several book chapters, is a Section Editor for the Veterinary Clinical
Pathology journal and a member of the ECVCP Diplomate Certification Committee
and ASVCP QALS committees.
She is still active in research and remains an
affiliate of the University of Pretoria.
Areas of special interest include inflammatory markers
and acute phase proteins, clinical pathology of wildlife, reference intervals
and laboratory quality assurance.
Prof. George Oikonomou

Prof Georgios
Oikonomou is Professor of Cattle Health and Welfare at the School of
Veterinary Science, University of Liverpool.
He is a vet and has spent a few years managing a 600 cow dairy herd in
Greece before moving to the USA where he worked at Cornell University and got
involved in various research projects on calf health and cattle lameness,
mastitis, and reproductive diseases.
He is currently
managing several research projects on dairy cattle lameness and calf health and
is also providing consultancy services to UK dairy farmers.
Dr Ioannis Oikonomidis

Ioannis (Yannis)
Oikonomidis graduated from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) in
2011 and following a 1.5-year internship, he undertook a PhD in clinical
pathology at the same institution.
Yannis joined the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, University
of Edinburgh, as a Senior Clinical Training Scholar (resident) in clinical
pathology in 2017 and upon completion of his residency, he became a Lecturer in
clinical pathology at the same university.
In 2021, Yannis obtained a board certification in clinical pathology, becoming
a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) and in
2022 he also became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Clinical
Pathology (ECVCP).
In 2023, Yannis achieved the status of RCVS recognised specialist in veterinary
clinical pathology. He worked at IDEXX Laboratories for three years before
joining the University of Liverpool in 2023 as a Senior Lecturer (Associate
Professor) in veterinary clinical pathology. Yannis is author of many
publications and he is a regular speaker in congresses and CPD events. He
enjoys all aspects of clinical pathology, and he loves research and teaching.
Dr Jorge Pena-Ramos
LdoVet PGDip(SAM) CSAVP(Internal Medicine) MRCVS

Jorge qualified
from Leon, Spain, in 2013.
Over the next eight years he combined general practice in Spain and the UK,
with two rotating internships, one at a private referral hospital in Surrey and
another at the University of Cambridge.
In 2019, he completed the ESAVS post-graduate certificate in Small Animal
Internal Medicine. Jorge recently finished the ECVIM (European College of
Veterinary Internal Medicine) residency in internal medicine at Langford Vets,
University of Bristol, in January 2025.

Dr Kathy Freeman

Dr.
Freeman completed her veterinary training (DVM) and completed her MS and PhD in
veterinary pathology at Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary
Medicine. She has been on faculty at
Oklahoma State, Cornell University and Ithaca College and has been the Director
and Head of Pathology or Senior Veterinary Clinical Pathologist at Animal
Reference Laboratory (USA), Lab Corp (Veterinary Division)(USA), Animal Health
Trust(UK), IDEXX Laboratories(UK) and SynLab-VPG(UK).
She
has lived and practiced veterinary clinical pathology in the United Kingdom for
the past 27 years. She is a Founding Diplomate for the European College of
Veterinary Clinical Pathology and is the Founding Chair for the American
Society of Veterinary Clinical Pathology Quality Assurance and Laboratory
Standards Committee and for the European College of Veterinary Clinical
Pathology Laboratory Standards Committee. She received the ASVCP Educator Award
in 2014 and was elected to the ECVCP Hall of Fame in 2024.
She
has been a consultant for Veterinary Information Network since 1997 and
currently works part-time for VIN as a staff veterinarian. She is a contractor
for Companion Animal Health Cellfie (USA), providing remote patient-side
cytologic evaluations. She is a member
of the nonprofit website committee for www.vetbiologicalvariation.org
and is a Director of CustomClinPath, a group working to develop applications in
veterinary biological variation. She received the American Society of
Veterinary Clinical Pathology Teaching Award in 2014. Her areas of special
interest include laboratory quality, cytology, and competency-based veterinary
specialty education.
Prof. Mathios Mylonakis

Mathios Mylonakis
is a graduate of the School of Veterinary Medicine, Aristotle University of
Thessaloniki (SVM-AUTh), Greece.
In the same institution, he completed a one-year internship in small animal
internal medicine and received a PhD degree focusing on the cytologic diagnosis
of canine monocytic ehrlichiosis.
He is currently a Professor of Small Animal Internal Medicine at the SVM-AUTh.
He has spent several years in first and second opinion private companion animal
Clinics.
As part of his sabbatical, he has joined
the Clinical Pathology Laboratory, Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital,
University of California-Davis, USA, and the Medical Oncology Clinic, University
of California-Davis, USA.
His main clinical and research interests include hematology, diagnostic
cytology, and vector borne diseases of the dog and cat.
He has authored or co authored more than 100 international peer-reviewed journal
publications or book chapters.
Matt Garland

Matthew
Garland is a laboratory director and veterinary laboratory manager with
over 20 years’ experience in the veterinary field. Matthew is passionate about
all things laboratory and has a keen interest in QA/QC and haematology. Matthew
has also contributed to several published research projects. Holding a degree
in chemistry and molecular biology he is a qualified Veterinary Nurse, a
registered Science technician with the Royal society of biology (RSB) and holds
various post graduate certificates.
Currently working for VPG (The veterinary Pathology group) he also enjoys his
time as a lecturer teaching student veterinary nurses the laboratory skill
syllabus for the Royal College Veterinary surgeons’ qualification. Matthew also
delivers regular CPD and has also been lucky to present at all the major UK
congresses (BSAVA, BVNA and LVS) as well as having several articles published
on veterinary haematology and clinical biochemistry. Being passionate about
team development and the development of others Matthew sits on the registers
assessors board of the RSB and is also a judge for the RSB biology apprentice
of the year.
Dr Nazaré Pinto da Cunha

Nazaré Pinto da Cunha graduated in Veterinary Medicine from University
of Porto in 2005 and later earned a PhD in Animal Pathology, with a thesis on
immunocytochemistry, from the University of Milan in 2010.
She completed a residency at the University of Milan by the European
College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology (ECVCP) and in 2011 became the first
Portuguese European specialist in Veterinary Clinical Pathology.
Nazaré actively contributes to the field as a member of the Executive
Committee of the European Society of Veterinary Clinical Pathology (ESVCP). She
has organized several meetings, including the first ECVCP Summer School and the
European Congress in Lisbon in 2023.
She is the author of several articles published in international
journals, a guest speaker at national and international congresses and courses,
and a scientific reviewer.
She is a founding partner of Vedis laboratory, where she is currently
clinical director, and an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Veterinary
Medicine at Lusófona University in Lisbon.
Her main areas of interest are diagnostic cytology and
immunocytochemistry.
Dr Nektarios Siachos
DVM MSc PhD

Originally from Greece, Dr Nektarios graduated as a veterinarian in
2010 and completed an MSc in Ruminant Husbandry and Internal Medicine at
the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
He then pursued a PhD at the same university, investigating protein metabolism
and muscle tissue mobilization in periparturient dairy cows.
After completing his PhD, he worked as a nutritionist consultant before joining
the University of Liverpool, where he spent two years as a postdoctoral
research associate on a project developing an automated cattle lameness
detection and body condition scoring using artificial intelligence.
He has recently joined SRUC’s School of Veterinary Medicine in Aberdeen as
Lecturer in Animal Husbandry contributing to teaching and research.
His primary interests lie in dairy cattle health, welfare and precision
livestock farming.
Dr Richard Saunders

Richard
graduated from Liverpool university in 1994, having intercalated in Zoology
during his veterinary course.
He has worked in small animal, exotic and British wildlife practice.
He holds the RCVS Certificate and Diploma (Mammalian), in Zoological
Medicine, is an RCVS Specialist in Zoo And Wild Animal Medicine, and is the
author of several chapters on exotic animals in BSAVA manuals, including the
BSAVA Manual of Rabbit Medicine, and the BSAVA Manual of Rabbit Surgery,
Dentistry and Imaging.
He is a co-author of Notes on Rabbit Internal Medicine, and Rabbit Behaviour,
Husbandry and Welfare. He is the RWAF Veterinary Adviser.
Dr Sian Frosini

Sian-Marie
Frosini graduated from the Royal Veterinary College, London, in 2013 and has
since focused on microbiology as an emerging para-clinical discipline in
veterinary medicine.
She completed a PhD focused on the clinical impact of methicillin-resistant
staphylococci in veterinary dermatology and then broadened her outlook into
multidrug-resistant pathogens more widely in her post-doctoral work.
Sian is the
RVC’s Lecturer in Veterinary Clinical Microbiology, and her expertise in
antimicrobial resistance and multidrug-resistant pathogens leads her to consult
on complicated antimicrobial decision making and case interpretation with
clinical colleagues.
Sian provides academic leadership to the RVC’s microbiology diagnostic service,
and she has overseen the introduction of new technologies and continued
interdisciplinary liaison to provide clinically focused results.
Sian is a keen proponent of promoting the understanding of clinical
microbiology to provide diagnostic stewardship as a first step towards
antimicrobial stewardship
Dr Sonia Sanchez-Redondo

Sonia graduated
from the University of León, Spain, in 2013.
She moved to the
UK shortly after and spent several years working in small animal general
practice and completed two rotating internships. In 2019, she earned a
postgraduate certificate in Small Animal Internal Medicine (ESAVS, University
of Luxembourg).
She then completed
a master's degree and a three-year residency training programme in Clinical
Pathology.
Sonia subsequently
passed her board examinations and became a Diplomate of the American College of
Veterinary Pathologists.
Prof Tobias Schwarz

Professor of
Veterinary Radiology
Tobias Schwarz
studied veterinary medicine at the Humboldt and Free University of Berlin in
Germany.
He did a diagnostic imaging residency at Glasgow University Veterinary School
and became a Diplomate in Diagnostic Imaging with the RCVS (DVR), ECVDI and
ACVR.
He has been an academic radiologist at the Universities of Pennsylvania and
Wisconsin-Madison and is the head of the Diagnostic Imaging Service at the
Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies since 2009.
In 2017, he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons
(FRCVS) and in 2019 he was elected as Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology
(FRSB) in the UK. In 2022, he was promoted to Professor and Chair of Veterinary
Radiology.
He has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles and his particular interests
are in thoracic imaging and computed tomography.
On both topics he has published a comprehensive textbook.
Dr Tomasso Furlanello
DR. MED. VET, PHD, EBVS® EUROPEAN SPECIALIST IN VETERINARY CLINICAL PATHOLOGY

A graduate from
the University of Bologna, with a thesis on Infectious Feline Peritonitis in
1990, he has attended the University of Georgia (USA) and other veterinary
centres in the United States.
He has dedicated over thirty years to sharing his clinical experience and
scientific research. He frequently presents at study groups, scientific
societies, and meetings, and has authored and co-authored numerous scientific
articles in peer-reviewed journals, including three recent papers on the
clinical applications of mass spectrometry.
Since 2005, he has been a diplomate of the European College of Veterinary
Clinical Pathology. In 2011, he earned a Doctorate in Research from the Faculty
of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Padua, where he has lectured for
many years.
His professional interests centre on laboratory medicine and its practical
applications, with a strong focus on clinical pharmacology. He is a founding
member of the Italian Society of Feline Medicine.
He practices exclusively internal medicine and clinical pathology at the
Private Veterinary Clinic San Marco in Veggiano (Padua), Italy, where he is the
clinical director of both the San Marco Veterinary Analysis Laboratory and the
San Marco Veterinary Clinic.
He is married to a veterinary behaviour specialist and is a proud father of two
daughters. He shares his home with numerous pets and enjoys modern
history and mountain hiking.
Dr Zoe Polizopoulou

Zoe
Polizopoulou graduated from the School of Veterinary Medicine, Aristotle
University of Thessaloniki (A.U.Th.), in 1986 and subsequently continued her
postgraduate studies at the Diagnostic Laboratory, Department of Clinical
Studies, of the same institution as an intern and as a PhD student.
After receiving the PhD degree (1991),
she worked as a junior research fellow and joined the academic staff of the
Department of Clinical Sciences of A.U.Th. in 1999. Following her election as
full professor (2015) and onwards, she is the Director of the Diagnostic
Laboratory at the Department of Clinical Studies.
She was accepted as Charter Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary
Clinical Pathology (ECVCP) upon the establishment of the College in 2001. In
the following years she was elected and served as vice president and president
of ECVCP. She was also elected and served as vice president and president
(2021- 2023) of the European Board of Veterinary Specialisation (EBVS).
She is representing Greece at FECAVA and has been involved in the production of
several factsheets (Vector Borne diseases, Zoonoses), which are offered to be
used by practicing veterinarians.
Her main research field is veterinary clinical pathology (mostly clinical
biochemistry of companion and farm animals). Special topics of interest include
the long term changes of cardiac biomarkers in canine mitral valve disease, the
study of selected biomarkers in chronic renal disease, senile cognitive
dysfunction of companion animals, epilepsy and degenerative CNS disorders, and
trace elements in farm animals.

The European Society of Veterinary Clinical Pathology (ESVCP)
and the European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology (ECVCP) are proud to
organize the annual Congress of Veterinary Clinical Pathology in Bristol, UK

gala dinner is planned for the evening of the 3rd of October, in the
Bristol Museum and Art Gallery.
In recent years this conference has attracted 120-160
professionals from all over Europe and other parts of the world, and has been a
hub for networking, professional development and educational opportunities. The
European Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology represents veterinarians
with a specialist interest in clinical laboratory diagnostics throughout
Europe. We see ourselves as a link between clinicians and clinical laboratory
scientists & technicians. This enables the society to reach over 30,000
veterinarians throughout Europe.
The chosen conference space offers exhibition areas, and
various other opportunities for brand display are available for sponsorship.
The international spread of the members of our society and college makes this
conference a truly global event. Daily coffee breaks and lunches will take
place in the exhibition area, providing ample opportunity to connect with the
congress participants for the sponsors with physical presence.
The set-up of the exhibition will take place from Wednesday 1st.
Sponsors and exhibitors are welcome to join the Welcome Reception on Wednesday
1st October. The exhibition floor will be open until the end of
